Rainbow Jello

I was one of the last parents to arrive at school the day the sign-up sheet went up for the Easter Party. Never be the last mom to sign up..the only thing left…jello.
I brought jello last time and really wanted to do cupcakes or cookies or something fun. Reluctantly I signed up for jello, again.
But I didn’t make just jello. Oh no, not me. I made JELLO!
I picked up a 6oz box of blue, yellow and red jello plus a box of knox gelatin. To get these fabulous layers, mix the blue jello with an envelope of the knox gelatin. Pour in two cups of boiling water. Dissolve the gelatin. Add 1/2 cup of ice. Stir until thick. Remove any remaining ice cubes and any bubbles that may have formed. Pour into a 9×13 inch pan. Let set in the refrigerator.
Repeat with the yellow jello and pour it over the set blue. Repeat with the red jello and pour it over the yellow. And there you have it, Rainbow Jello.
I won’t go into the whole primary and secondary color thing, but these colors, when stacked upon each other, create other colors. There is not an orange or green layer. It just looks like it when the red and yellow layers touch and then yellow and blue layers touch. Pretty cool.
Oh, and these can be made and cut a day ahead.

I agree with a pp. Public schools have really taken the fun out of everything. You can’t bring baked goods but you can bring prepackaged BAKED potato chips – Like those are so much better for you. Weird huh? LOL

The public schools do that, because there afraid if you make them, someone will be allergic to something in them. Quite frankly, they just don’t wanna be sued.

Many people do not understand “someone will be allergic” could be that someone MAY DIE. Our family deals with multiple allergens, diabetes, and hypoglycemia. The reactions range from itchiness, to stomach cramps, to violent behavior (yes bread can do that), to possible death within minutes. We always have an EPI-pen.
The schools may be trying to protect themselves, but they are also protecting our children. Purchased items have ingredients listed.
On a side note: I used to enjoy one person’s contribution to “potlucks”,.. until I saw her kitchen

My grandma used to make this, but it was with firmer stripes. I like your way.
You can add cream cheese and condensed milk to make a “creamy” color that mixes well into your stripes, too.

This is…I mean…that’s just…I’m speechless! I’ve been made speechless by Jell-o! I have seen all sorts of jell-o silliness: jell-o aquariums filled with gummi fish, jell-o flags of many nations, and I even love toying with jell-o myself, although I never got farther than jell-o jelly beans for Easter.
Rainbow knox blox? Genius. Simple. Edible. Pretty. Bouncy. Jell-o.

basically, the reason why you use knox jello also is so that the jello is firmer, which makes it a heck of a lot easier to cut into clean lined shapes, like the rectangle of jello above. I have this recipe setting in the fridge at the moment, i’m just passing the time away before the next layer, and I did not use knox gelatin, because i didn’t have any left at home. SO far, it’s turning out perfectly fine.

Found your blog through Design Mom and I LOVE the rainbow jello idea. It’s very similar to knoxblox
but with a few more steps. I think you might love double decker knox blox too. I’ve made them for my kids for years and jello you can hold is always a big hit!! Hope it’s okay to put the link here for recipe & pictures and it works–I’m a still-learning newbie!:)

422- it will take about 45 minutes for each layer to set up. Once a layer is firm, you can pour the next layer directly over the top. It will take about 3 hours in total to complete, so plan accordingly. I hope this helps!

You add an envelope of knox gelatin to each layer, right? Not just the blue (first) one? Maybe a box of knox comes with 3 envelopes but I wasn’t sure by the directions. LOL, it’s been a VERY long time since I made jello. Thanks for the fun recipe!

I make 7 layer jello sometimes, and i like to do it in rainbow order. but, the colors sometimes blend together too much. I love this recipe because it creates the illusion that there is a rainbow. plus, it will take much less time than 7 layers! I’ll try this one next time.

Rafael,
Knox is unflavored gelatin (like Jello, but with no flavor.) It is used to harden the Jello so you can cut it into pieces and pick it up with your fingers.

So cool! I made it for my friend, for his birthday party (as addition to my present).
He’s gay and just come out this year…that had good and bad sides, so he was bit under the weather lately…this jello cheer him so much he couldn’t stop smiling.

wow thats a gr8 way to make jello become JELLO did u think of the idea thow or did u get it of a website. anyway that doesnt matter i decided to try it for myself and it works but i found if you let the colours on ly half set the run into each other more and you can see orange and green way easier and if u put red at the bottom you get purple then when set simply cut the red of from the bottom leaving purple. but to make it even easier for u buy red orange yellow green blue and purple coloured jello cause i know they sell that in australia

Justine, you might want to make sure you know how to spell before you start throwing out insults about peoples’ intelligence.
Also, get your facts straight. Maybe it’s called Jelly there, but in the US it is known as Jello, for the brand of the same name.

That rainbow jello looks really pretty ,and I love that Blue and Green color by eachother they match .so do red and yellow and orange. Just a quick tip to add one more layer if you are doing a unit on rainbows for school. Start with a purple layer first, then blue, yellow and red. We are doing a science unit on rainbows in Kindergarten and are serving this to the kids (with the added purple). When we serve it we are also going to add a dollop of cool whip for the “clouds”.

Jello is one of the few treats everyone in my multi-allergy sugar sensitive family can enjoy. Although I have jello molds, we have had little success with more than one color for the Jigglers. I never thought to add Knox or to use cold water, like from the regular quick set method! Thank you!

i will defintiely add this to my repetorie of Jello recipes as i am the “jello queen of skokie” (north chgo suburb). i never go anywhere w/out bringing some sort of jello in one of my aprx 50 diff molds….whatever the event/holiday/season, etc, i have a mold for it. and if any of you live near any Amish area (we go to Shipshewana, IN very often), you can buy jello in bulk bags & save $$$$………and they have so many diff flavors! unfortunately, no sugar free jello. this looks wonderful & i can’t wait to make it!

Hi guys! Great idea!
Couple of questions:
1) If I did want to make this with no chemicals, what would you suggest? Cranberry juice and agar agar, etc?
2) How do you cut it so exactly and get it out of the pan cleanly. That’s the part of these things I usually mess up. Any tricks for creating (and removing from the pan) perfect slices?

PS Does is bottom layer kind of “air-bubbly?” What if I poured red first, then yellow, then blue, then cut the pieces with a ruler (?) then inverted the pan (now the red would be on top). Would that lead to cleaner and more perfect jello pieces/squares? Thank you.
